Building an early-medieval boat

The Oldenburg Wall Museum, located near the Baltic Sea in Ostholstein, showcases the life of the Slavs in the early Middle Ages to visitors. The museum presents this fascinating era through a detailed exhibition and an extensive open-air area. In the open-air section, numerous volunteers and experts are engaged in reviving and demonstrating historical craftsmanship.

In September 2020, the museum initiated an impressive project, namely the construction of an early medieval boat. Using historical tools and techniques, this unique replica was created over time.

The documentary accompaniment of this process extended from the first craft steps to the completion and ceremonial christening in April 2023. My focus in this work is on the material and craftsmanship of the boat builders.
